Gansu is home to 44 minority ethnic groups totaling 2.38 million people, 9.3 percent of the region's total population. The province and the World Bank have provided a total of 72.04 million yuan for 316 schools in minority area. Meanwhile, the country's national compulsory education program invested 150 million yuan for 366 schools in 12 poverty-stricken counties in the province.

Lanzhou City University

Lanzhou City University is a regular institution of higher learning offering full-time undergraduate programs, which was founded with approval of the Ministry of Education in China in 2006. Its predecessor is Lanzhou Teacher’s College founded in 1958 and Bailie Oil School founded in 1940s by Rewi Alley, the New Zealand international friend. The university has enjoyed a long history of education. The university has a teaching and administrative staff of around 1156. Among them, 94 are professors and 301 associate professors, 88 are doctor’s degree holders and 413 master’s degree holders. It has seventeen colleges and runs 22 institutes such as the Institute of Gansu Urban Development, etc. It offers 37 various specialities at undergraduate level covering nine disciplines—humanity, science, social science, management and engineering, etc., with a total enrollment of 15,102 full-time students.

Lanzhou Jiaotong University

Lanzhou Jiaotong University ( LZJTU ) (formerly Lanzhou Railway University ) was established in 1958. In April 2003, the name of Lanzhou Railway University was changed to Lanzhou Jiaotong University. After 52 years of construction and development, LZJTU ranks as a comprehensive technical institution. The university has 2 campuses, 17 schools and a teaching department. It has 3 postdoctoral research centers, 24 doctoral disciplines, 94 master's degrees, 57 undergraduate programs, 9 provincial-level key disciplines, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 national University Science and Technology District. The university currently employs 2,325 educational professionals and its current enrollment totals over 30,000 students. Lanzhou Jiaotong University started to accept foreign students in 2005. In 2008, the Univiersity was qualified for Chinese government scholarship to foreign students studying in China. Till now, there are over 200 foreign students from all over the world studying on this campus.

Lanzhou University

Founded in 1909, Lanzhou University is one of the top universities directly administered by the Ministry of Education and elected as one of the key universities in “Project 211” and “Project 985”. It was originally named as Gansu School of Law and Politics. In 1928, it was expanded into Lanzhou Sun Yat-Sen University. It was renamed as National University of Lanzhou in 1945. In 2002 and 2004, the Institute of Gansu Grassland Ecology and Lanzhou Medical College merged in to Lanzhou University respectively.Lanzhou University currently occupies a total area of 3807 mu and consists of 6 campuses with 2 affiliated hospitals and 1stomatological hospital. The university has totally 4,257 staffs and teachers working on the campus, of which 1,975 are faculty members, including 424 professors, 874 associate professors, 423 doctoral supervisors and 9 academicians. So far 20,083 students are enrolled in the undergraduate program, 10,646 students in the postgraduate and doctoral programs.

Lanzhou University of Technology

Lanzhou University of Technology is located in Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu Province, once a significant fortress on China’s historic Silk Road, is a unversity of science and engineering with a long history. The university was first established in 1919 as Gansu provincial Technical School. In 1958, the school was renamed Lanzhou Polytechnic Institute,and in the same year, after a merger with Gansu Jiaotong College, the Institute was renamed as Gansu University of Technology. In 1965, the University expanded the specialty curriculum when three specialties from Northeast Heavy-Machine Building Institute, and one specialty from Beijing Machine-Building Institute became a part of the University. The above specialties were a part of First Machine-Building Industry Ministry of China prior to transfer.

Northwest Normal University

Located in Lanzhou, Gansu, Northwest Normal University is the key university jointly sponsored by the People''''s government of Gansu province and the Ministry of Education. It is also one of the 14 state-supported universities in western China. At present, the University has 6 postdoctoral research centers for Pedagogy, Chemistry, Chinese Language and Literature, Histology, Mathematics, Physics, Geography; 7 first-grade disciplines (Pedagogy, Chemistry, Chinese Language and Literature, Histology, Mathematics, Physics, Geography), 50 second-grade disciplines and 1 specialty with Doctorate granting authority; 32 first-grade disciplines,157 second-grade disciplines and 11 specialties with master’s degree granting authority,66 Bachelor programs.
